Project Overview
The project involves the development of the Eyre Peninsula Desalination Plant, a critical piece of water infrastructure designed to provide a climate independent drinking water supply for more than 35,000 residents across the region. Located at Billy Lights Point, the facility will produce 5.3 gigalitres of potable water per year using reverse osmosis technology, significantly reducing reliance on vulnerable groundwater sources.
The project includes a 5.3 gigalitre per year desalination plant, tunneled marine intake and outfall infrastructure designed to protect sensitive coastal environments, and a new transfer pipeline connecting the facility to SA Water’s existing network, supported by associated civil, electrical and access upgrades. ACCIONA, appointed as the major construction partner, is delivering the full design and construction of the plant in close collaboration with SA Water, refining the project in response to environmental, technical and community considerations.
As a major investment in long term water security for the Eyre Peninsula, the project carries significant regional importance, balancing complex marine interfaces, environmental sensitivities and essential service delivery requirements. Its scale and strategic purpose underscore its role in strengthening the resilience of South Australia’s water supply network.
