Project Overview

The project involves the revitalisation of Powerhouse Ultimo, transforming the museum into an expanded exhibition and learning destination within a new creative industries precinct for Sydney. The AU$250 million heritage renewal will reorient the museum’s main entrance, create a new public square and establish improved connections to surrounding precincts and public transport via The Goods Line.

The redevelopment includes four flexible exhibition spaces capable of hosting internationally significant applied arts and sciences programs, new public domain areas including a 2,000sqm extension of The Goods Line, the Post Office Courtyard and an internal courtyard, as well as dedicated learning spaces designed to support immersive educational experiences. The project also features an activated Harris Street façade, upgraded circulation systems to enhance visitor movement, separation of front and back of house operations, and the conservation and adaptive reuse of the heritage listed Power Station buildings.

As one of the most significant cultural infrastructure investments in NSW, the project will increase public access to the Powerhouse Collection of more than 500,000 objects, improve visitor experience through expanded programming and intuitive circulation, and strengthen the museum’s role as a leading cultural and educational institution. Its combination of heritage conservation, complex urban interfaces and major public realm improvements underscores the project’s scale and importance to the broader cultural landscape.
